Absenteeism Rate: Meaning and Purpose
The absenteeism rate shows what share of scheduled working days are lost to unplanned absence. It helps HR see the impact on productivity and cost.
Factors That Affect the Result
- Number of employees
- Working days in the period
- Days of unplanned absence
- Which leaves to exclude, such as planned leave and holidays
- Trends by team or day of the week
How the Absenteeism Rate Is Calculated
Available days = Employees × Working days in the period
Absenteeism rate % = Absent days ÷ Available days × 100
With 100 employees, 22 working days and 66 days of unplanned absence, the rate is 66 ÷ 2,200 × 100 = 3%.
