Gratuity: Meaning and Purpose

Gratuity is a lump-sum benefit an employer pays to an employee for long service, governed in India by the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972. This calculator estimates it from your last drawn salary and years of service.

Factors That Affect the Result

  • Last drawn monthly basic salary plus dearness allowance
  • Completed years of continuous service
  • Months beyond the last full year, for rounding
  • Statutory maximum limit on gratuity
  • Eligibility of five years of service, with exceptions

How the Gratuity Is Calculated

Gratuity = (Last drawn basic + DA) × 15 × Completed years of service ÷ 26

Service of more than 6 months in the last year is rounded up to the next full year

The 26 in the divisor is the number of working days in a month

Worked example

Last drawn basic plus DA of ₹50,000 and 10 years of service gives 50,000 × 15 × 10 ÷ 26 = ₹2,88,462.

Why It Matters

Compliance note: The Act sets a statutory ceiling on tax-free gratuity. Check the current limit and your eligibility before paying.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for gratuity?
An employee who completes five continuous years of service with an establishment covered by the Payment of Gratuity Act is eligible. The five-year condition is relaxed in the case of death or disablement, and the Code on Social Security brings changes for fixed-term employees, so check the rule applicable to you.
Which salary components count for gratuity?
Only basic salary and dearness allowance are counted. HRA, special allowance, bonus and other variable pay are left out.
How is service rounded?
If the extra period beyond completed years is more than six months, it is counted as a full year. Six months or less is ignored.
Is there a maximum limit on gratuity?
Yes. The Act caps the amount, and tax exemption is also limited. Confirm the current limit with a professional before issuing the settlement.
Is gratuity taxable?
Within the prescribed limits it is exempt for most employees, and any amount above that is taxable as salary. Tax treatment depends on whether the employee is covered by the Act.
Is this gratuity calculator free to use?
Yes. It is free, needs no signup, and your inputs stay in your browser.
