Attrition Rate: Meaning and Purpose
The attrition rate measures the percentage of employees who leave the company over a period. It is one of the most watched retention metrics in HR.
Factors That Affect the Result
- Headcount at the start and end of the period
- Number of separations, voluntary and involuntary
- Length of the period measured
- Segments such as department, tenure or grade
- Benchmarks for your industry
How the Attrition Rate Is Calculated
Average headcount = (Opening headcount + Closing headcount) ÷ 2
Attrition rate % = Separations ÷ Average headcount × 100
Annualised rate = Rate × (12 ÷ Months in period)
With 200 employees at the start, 220 at the end and 21 exits, the average headcount is 210 and the attrition rate is 10%.

Why It Matters
A high attrition rate raises hiring, training and productivity costs. Tracking it by month shows whether the cause is hiring quality, pay or management.
Compliance note: Decide whether to include involuntary exits, retirements and contract ends, and keep the definition consistent over time.
