What Is Form 16?
Form 16 is a certificate issued annually by an employer to its employees, certifying the total salary paid and the tax deducted at source (TDS) on that salary during a financial year — serving as the primary document employees use to file their income tax returns.
Components of Form 16
- Part A — contains employer and employee details (PAN, TAN), the summary of tax deducted and deposited quarter-wise, generated and downloaded through the TRACES portal
- Part B — a detailed breakup of salary components, exemptions claimed (like HRA), deductions under Chapter VI-A (like Section 80C), and the final computed taxable income and tax liability
Why Form 16 Matters
- The primary source document for salaried employees to accurately file their annual income tax return.
- Serves as official proof of income and tax payment, often required for loan applications, visa processing, and other financial verification purposes.
- Employers are legally obligated to issue Form 16 to employees from whose salary TDS has been deducted.
When Is Form 16 Issued?
Employers must issue Form 16 to employees by 15 June following the end of the relevant financial year, giving employees sufficient time to file their income tax return before the usual filing deadline.
